NYC, Coalition of Cities Sue Trump Administration Over Expanded 'Public Charge' Rule

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that New York, alongside a coalition of major cities and counties, is suing the Trump administration over an expanded "public charge" immigration rule set to take effect September 18.

The rule would let federal officials deny visas and green cards to immigrants deemed likely to rely on public benefits. Mamdani warned the policy could push up to 4 million people to drop healthcare coverage out of fear it would jeopardize their immigration status, calling the change "intentionally vague" and designed to instill uncertainty.

Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County are joining New York's lawsuit. Separately, New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a coalition of 21 states and the District of Columbia in an independent legal challenge asking a federal court in New York to block the rule before it takes effect.
