Verstappen Claims First Pole of 2026 as Russell Struggles in Malaysia

Max Verstappen finally claimed his first pole position of the season, delivering a commanding, near-untouchable lap to secure Red Bull's first pole of 2026 at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The Dutchman beat Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton into second by three-tenths of a second, with Hamilton also producing a standout performance.

However, the bigger championship story emerged further down the order: title leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, while his Mercedes teammate and closest rival, George Russell, struggled to just eighth, putting him at risk of losing further crucial points in the title fight.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar qualified third but will drop five places due to a new engine penalty, promoting Antonelli to third on the grid and pushing Russell back to seventh for the race start. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified fifth, while defending world champion Lando Norris of McLaren will start sixth.

With Verstappen reasserting Red Bull's pace and Russell continuing to flounder in Sepang, the gap at the top of the championship standings could widen significantly depending on how Sunday's race unfolds.
