Ukraine War: Ratcliffe's Secret Moscow Mission Failed to Bend Putin, May Have Hardened His Resolve
CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a secretive trip to Moscow in late August to warn Russia against attacking NATO and push for an end to the war in Ukraine, according to multiple U.S. outlets.
He reportedly even floated a trilateral summit between Trump, Putin and Zelensky. But per the Washington Post, the visit failed to persuade Putin to halt the fighting — and may have instead strengthened his resolve to pursue a military victory, as he intensifies bombing campaigns exploiting Ukraine's weakened air defenses.
The Kremlin confirmed intelligence-level contacts occurred but denied any direct meeting between Ratcliffe and Putin himself.
