Trump's $45,000 Cash Gifts to Young Female Aides Spark Ethics Scrutiny

Financial disclosures have revealed that President Trump gave $45,000 cash gifts to three young female White House aides — Natalie Harp, 35, Margo Martin, 31, and Chamberlain Harris, 26. The payments were listed in the disclosures as "Cash Gift for Holidays."

The amount represents nearly a third of each aide's $150,000 annual salary. Harp, who has served as Trump's executive assistant since Day One, has drawn particular attention amid scrutiny of her close proximity to the president, including accompanying him on a secretive flight out of Turkey earlier this year.

The White House defended the gifts, calling them a "longstanding practice" of giving Christmas gifts to people in Trump's orbit, both in government and during his time in the private sector, and stated they are unrelated to the aides' official duties.

However, some ethics experts have raised questions about whether the payments comply with federal ethics standards, adding to renewed public and political attention on the relationships between Trump and his closest aides.
