'Tenzing' Premieres at Telluride, Puts Sherpa Legend at Center of Everest Story
Jennifer Peedom's "Tenzing" premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, retelling the historic 1953 Mount Everest expedition through the perspective of Tenzing Norgay rather than Sir Edmund Hillary.
Genden Phuntsok stars as the adult Tenzing, while Tom Hiddleston plays Hillary, with Willem Dafoe as expedition leader Colonel John Hunt and Caitríona Balfe as Himalayan Club secretary Jill Henderson.
Critics called the film a moving, if somewhat predictable, biopic that gains fresh weight by centering the Sherpa guide long overshadowed by Western mountaineering narratives.
Shot on real locations across Nepal and New Zealand, the film also drew praise for Rebekka Karijord's sweeping score. Apple Original Films will release "Tenzing" in limited theaters October 9 before streaming October 16 on Apple TV.
