Psychedelic Pop Icon Peter Max Passes Away at 88

Peter Max, the artist whose swirling, color-saturated designs came to define the "flower power" era of the 1960s, has died at age 88, his son Adam Max confirmed in a written statement. Max died on Monday, with no cause of death given. Anchorage Daily News

Born Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin in 1937, his Jewish family fled Nazi Germany for Shanghai when he was a baby before eventually settling in New York. He studied art before opening a graphic design studio in 1961, quickly becoming a favorite of ad agencies and pop culture alike. Anchorage Daily News

Max served as the official artist for the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Indianapolis 500, the World Cup, and the World Series, with his art appearing on a Boeing 777 and a cruise ship. His son remembered his "extraordinary creativity" and warmth. The Hollywood Reporter
