Double Mourning in Norway: Princess Astrid Dies at 94 Days After Brother King Harald's Funeral
Norway's royal family is grieving anew after Princess Astrid, older sister of the late King Harald V, died peacefully on Friday, September 11, at age 94, the palace confirmed.
Her death came just two days after she attended her brother's funeral at Oslo Cathedral on September 9, arriving by wheelchair in what became her final public appearance. Harald died August 28 after more than 35 years on the throne.
King Haakon VIII paid tribute to his aunt, saying she "represented the Royal House with warmth and dedication" and had stepped into the First Lady role at just 22 following their mother's death. Astrid had recently battled pneumonia. King Haakon has ordered flags at half-mast.
