Arctic Face-Off: Britain, Norway and US Thwart Secret Russian Cable-Sabotage Exercise

NATO allies Britain, Norway and the United States tracked and confronted Russian submersibles near Svalbard this spring after Moscow's GUGI undersea warfare directorate tried to simulate deploying a covert weapon capable of disabling undersea cables without detection.

The vessels were forced to abandon their exercise and leave the area before any cables were damaged.

Britain and Norway had disclosed the broader operation in April, but the new weapon, its precise location, and direct U.S. involvement were revealed only now.

The cables link Svalbard to mainland Norway, carrying vast amounts of satellite data.

Western officials fear Russia is escalating sabotage activity across Europe amid a static Ukraine front line, testing NATO's resolve.
