Altman Rules Out OpenAI IPO in 2026, Says No Level of AI Extinction Risk Is Tolerable
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the company will not go public in 2026, citing mounting AI safety concerns in remarks published Saturday. Altman told Fortune that given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and OpenAI doesn't feel pressure to do so.
Pressed on whether there's a 10% chance AI could cause human extinction, Altman said he didn't know how such an estimate could be made, but warned the risk was serious enough that AI companies and governments should act as though it could not be tolerated.
His comments follow Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow AI capability development, with Altman posting his agreement. Altman also hinted OpenAI may soon join other firms in a safety-focused development pact.
