Washington Hilton's Existing Ballroom Raises Questions Over Trump's $200M White House Project
As President Trump presses ahead with his roughly $200 million White House ballroom, built where the East Wing once stood, critics point out that an established alternative already exists nearby. The Washington Hilton, located just blocks from the White House, has hosted large-scale presidential events for decades in its International Ballroom, including the annual Correspondents' Dinner.
Trump has repeatedly argued a secure, on-site venue is necessary, especially after a shooting disrupted this year's dinner at the Hilton. However, skeptics note the existing venue already offers ample capacity and historical precedent, raising questions about whether an entirely new, taxpayer- and donor-funded structure is truly necessary so close to a comparable existing space.
