Twin Pacific Warming Patterns Set to Reshape US Weather
A massive marine heatwave in the north-east Pacific is combining with a rapidly intensifying El Niño — a rare pairing observed only once before in recorded history.
NOAA's Andrew Leising said the heatwave, which formed in May 2025, has pushed surface temperatures 3-4°C above average across the entire ocean. El Niño is expected to strengthen through autumn into potentially the strongest on record, with the Met Office projecting anomalies over 3°C by late 2026.
Scientists warn the combined effect could intensify droughts, wildfires, and flooding across the US, while disrupting marine ecosystems further.
