Trump Reportedly Asked Xi If He Wants to Buy US Arms

President Donald Trump defended the pending US arms sale to Taiwan in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping by describing it as one of many weapons sales Washington makes worldwide, and even asked Xi whether he might want to buy US arms, US Ambassador to China David Perdue said on Sunday. Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Perdue did not say when the offer was made.

It came days after Trump hosted Xi for a state visit at the White House. Host Shannon Bream cited concerns from Republican and Democratic lawmakers over delayed weapons orders to Taiwan, and asked whether Washington is holding back arms to appease Xi.

Such a sale to China would upend generations of US policy and could expose American technology to a geopolitical rival. The issue is sensitive: a $14 billion Taiwan package has been pending since spring, and the 1982 "Six Assurances" say Washington will not consult Beijing on arms sales to Taiwan. Trump has said he has made no commitment either way.
