St. Louis’ Iconic Gateway Arch Goes Dark in September to Protect Millions of Migrating Birds
St. Louis’ iconic Gateway Arch will turn off its exterior lights each night throughout September 2026 to help protect millions of birds migrating south along the Mississippi Flyway. The initiative is part of a wider conservation effort that began in 2002.
Bright artificial light can disorient nocturnal migrants, pulling them away from their routes and increasing the risk of exhaustion or collisions with buildings. By switching off unnecessary lighting, the landmark aims to give birds safer passage during the peak autumn migration season.
The Gateway Arch will remain visible during daylight, while its nighttime darkness sends a powerful message about light pollution and wildlife protection. Conservationists say landmarks, businesses and households can all help by reducing outdoor lighting during migration periods.
