Simmons Signs One-Year Deal With Sacramento

Team USA opened its FIBA Women's World Cup campaign against China in Berlin on Friday, and the starting lineup left out Caitlin Clark. Head coach Kara Lawson went with a veteran-heavy five: Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, Breanna Stewart, and Napheesa Collier, sending Clark to the bench to open the tournament.

Clark enters the World Cup off a career-best WNBA season, ranking third in scoring and second in assists, and many expected her to start after her MVP run at qualifiers in March. Lawson instead trusted Gray's championship pedigree at point guard.

The choice sparked immediate backlash online, with fans arguing the sport's most popular player deserved a starting nod. Lawson has noted roles are still evolving, meaning Clark could still finish games as one of the team's most valuable players.

All eyes now turn to how fast Clark works her way into the rotation as Team USA chases World Cup gold.
