PM Andy Burnham Cancels Downing Street Engagements Following Death of Father Roy
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has cancelled engagements today and tomorrow following the death of his father Roy, who was suffering from Alzheimer's.
Mr Burnham has spoken about his father's illness, which meant that he did not know his son had become Prime Minister, an experience he has said helped shape his push to reform the UK's social care system.
Mr Burnham had been due to host business leaders in No 10 on Monday afternoon before the engagements were called off. In an interview shortly before taking office in July, Burnham reflected on his father being unaware he was on the brink of power, calling it "a sadness because he would be proud," adding it was "his achievement as well... although he doesn't know it."
