'Kid Messi' Shockwave: JJ Gabriel Requests Exit From Manchester United
Manchester United have been left stunned after 15-year-old academy sensation JJ Gabriel requested cancellation of his registration, throwing his Old Trafford future into doubt.
The forward, dubbed "Kid Messi" and compared to Duncan Edwards for his generational talent, had been in line to become United's youngest-ever player in Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.
Gabriel scored 21 goals last season to win the U18 Premier League Golden Boot and was named the league's Player of the Year, also becoming the youngest-ever recipient of United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player award.
Suspicions grew after he quietly wiped all United-related content from his Instagram. While club officials are described as "shocked," they remain hopeful the situation can be resolved, noting his contract runs until summer and he cannot simply be deregistered.
