Hundreds of Protesters Block Portsmouth Roads After 140 Migrants Rescued Off Hampshire Coast
Hundreds of demonstrators blocked roads in Portsmouth on Sunday night after an overcrowded small boat carrying roughly 140 migrants was intercepted off the Hampshire coast and brought ashore at Eastney Landing.
Around 500 protesters, many dressed in black and wearing masks, gathered near the shoreline chanting "Stop the boats," blocking Fort Cumberland Road to prevent authorities from transporting the arrivals to a processing centre.
Hampshire Police deployed 50-60 officers, issued a dispersal order, and urged the public to avoid the area. Coastguard, helicopters, and lifeboats were involved in the emergency rescue operation. The standoff mirrors a similar anti-migration protest that disrupted the Port of Dover a day earlier.
