The Squad That Never Logs Off
The room glowed blue and violet, lit by flickering monitors and old fairy lights nobody bothered to take down. Past midnight, but on Fridays, time didn't exist here. Jake hunched over his controller mid boss-fight. Emily laughed at something unrelated in the group chat. Tyler muttered strategies no one followed. Ashley watched quietly from the corner, glancing up whenever someone died. This wasn't just gaming — it was ritual.
Years ago, they were strangers matched in a random lobby, bonded over a shared hatred of one brutal boss fight. Inside jokes grew. Late-night talks replaced late-night gaming tips. Somehow, they became family. Now they crammed weekly into this cluttered room, cables everywhere, Mochi the cat perched like she owned the place — judging every missed shot.
"Left! Go left!" Emily yelled, not even watching the same screen. "There's a wall," Jake groaned. "There's always a wall with you," Ashley smirked. Laughter filled the room — easy, familiar, warm. An old anime rerun played forgotten on another screen. Outside, the city slept.
Inside, four different lives — stress, deadlines, exams, excuses to "lock in" — melted into one shared universe where the only thing that mattered was surviving the next wave. It was never about winning. It was about the shared silence before a big hit, the collective yell after, the way stress vanished the moment headsets went on.
When the match ended, no one moved. Snacks appeared. Another match queued. Mochi yawned, unbothered. Some circles fade. This one only grew tighter. They'd log off eventually. Just — not yet.
