NASA's Roman Space Telescope Successfully Launches Aboard SpaceX Falcon Heavy

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off at 7:26 a.m. EDT aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

In the final countdown, SpaceX began fueling the second stage of its Falcon Heavy rocket with RP-1 fuel, with all systems performing well and no constraints for launch.

The Falcon Heavy's 27 Merlin engines generated more than 5 million pounds of thrust, pushing the rocket rapidly through the atmosphere.

The mission launched nine months ahead of schedule, sending Roman toward Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2, roughly a million miles from Earth.

Roman senior scientist Julie Mcenery said the telescope will survey the Milky Way and catalog 20 billion stars, marking one of the most ambitious astronomical surveys ever attempted.

The observatory also carries 1.35 million names submitted by people around the world, including Artemis II and III astronauts.
