John Galliano Withdraws From 2027 Met Gala Exhibit Amid Antisemitism Backlash

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has scrapped its planned retrospective honoring fashion designer John Galliano, which was set to run from May 2027 and serve as the theme for next year's Met Gala. Galliano announced the decision on Instagram, saying it was "best for the exhibition not to take place at this time" following weeks of mounting backlash.

Met director Max Hollein confirmed the joint decision, while Met Gala chair Anna Wintour called Galliano's withdrawal "courageous," adding that she fully supported the move.

The controversy stemmed from Galliano's 2011 antisemitic and anti-Asian outburst at a Paris bar, which led to his firing from Christian Dior and a subsequent criminal conviction in France. In recent weeks, critics — including major donors, Jewish leaders and city officials — had pressured the Met to abandon the tribute, which would have made Galliano only the third living designer honored with a solo Costume Institute show, following Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo.

The museum has not yet announced a replacement exhibition, meaning the 2027 Met Gala currently has no confirmed theme.
